Like a “little black dress”, every man needs that perfect “go to suit” for any occasion. Sure, who doesn’t love the scruffy jeans and t-shirt look, I know I do. But when it’s time to look sophisticated, smart and put together, there is nothing like a man in a suit. Surprisingly, most men can turn the simple act of buying a suit into a complete fashion nightmare. Too many men are failing to buy the perfect suit-The pants are too long, the jacket sleeves are too short, it’s too tight in the shoulders, the lapels are too wide, the buttons too tight... I could go on and on, but I will stop right here. Below, I have provided a “know how guide” for guys to follow when buying a suit. For all you guys out there, please print this out, laminate and study it. This will help you to wearing the easiest fashion statement you can make- A Suit.
KNOW WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR
Go in prepared with a checklist-Not the one you have at your office from your boss, or the one your wife gave to you for groceries, but the one you want in your dream suit. Your list should contain the following categories: budget, number of suits, lifestyle, and design. First and foremost, you should have a set budget in mind. This way you won’t be persuaded by the sales person to spend more than you can afford. Next, analyze your lifestyle and see if having an everyday suit makes more sense versus one that you can only wear to formal events. Ask yourself questions before stepping into a store like: How many suits do I need? Am I wearing suits more than once a week? Is my current suit wardrobe up to date? Do I have any styles in mind that I would like to emulate from the fashion magazines or blogs? Knowing the answers to the above make your homework of finding the perfect suit a bit easier.
KNOW THY MEASURMENTS
Knowing your measurements is important in your quest to finding the ultimate suit. The first thing to do is understand that you should not base your suit size on the clothes you would normally wear. Since this is a serious investment, please go to a tailor to be measured up correctly for your suit, even if your not getting your suits custom made. They will do a better job sizing you up. Take those measurements with you when you’re shopping for your suit. It’s important to know that it must fit correctly in the shoulders, because no matter what the sales guy says this part of the jacket can’t be tailored. For a proper fit, your suit jacket should cover your rear and sit flat on your back. Make sure it isn't puckering or pulling. The jacket’s sleeves should end at your wrist, and your shirt sleeves should stick out another half an inch to quarter inch. The jacket’s shoulders should hug your shoulders rather than squeeze too tightly. Also, you should be able to easily button the jacket without it straining. On the other hand, there shouldn’t be much space between the button and your chest (no more than a fist’s worth). Overall, the jacket may require tailoring to fit your body.
KNOW THE MATERIALS
The trap many men then fall into is that they simply buy a suit based on the colour and pattern they want, and don’t consider anything else when trying it on. However, by not considering the material of the suit you are instantly creating a problem. For example, imagine a heavy wool suit in the sweltering heat of the summer. You may want to choose a lighter fabric such as linen which is worn frequently outside in the summer. However, the most popular and versatile suit fabric is wool. Other popular options include cotton, flannel, and linen. Wool and polyester blends are popular because the material is easy to maintain and less susceptible to wrinkles. Avoid a fabric that has a high polyester content because it may not look or breathe well.
KNOW THE STANDARD SUIT COLORS
Suits are investments and designed to last, so in order to prevent your closet from being filled with purple, brown, or even white suits, it’s important to select suits among the colors of navy blue, black, or charcoal grey. These primary colors encompass the majority of men’s suits, and complement the complexion of most men. Navy blue is the most common choice for suits. Black is typically reserved for formal events, such as funerals, weddings, and evening gatherings. Charcoal gray is a versatile color and is a great choice if you can only afford to have one style suit in your wardrobe. These three colors provide the most flexibility because they can be worn in various social settings.
KNOW WHAT A TAILOR CAN DO
When you buy a suit off the rack it’s important to know what a tailor can do. Please note that if your suit doesn’t fit properly in the shoulders it’s not going to fit anywhere else. This is an area that a tailor cannot alter, so it’s important this fits perfectly. If the pants are an inch too tight or too large in the waist, a tailor can usually fix them, however if it’s more than an inch, you’re asking for the impossible. As for the jacket a tailor usually will need to alter the length of the sleeves. Also, the sides of a jacket often need tapering so they contour to your torso. Please check out the collar as well because many times there is a roll in the back of the suit jacket, up near your neck, and a good tailor can correct this.
KNOW THE DETAILS
Picking the perfect suit lies in details. In other words, you can tell the difference between a low quality suit and an exceptionally high quality suit by looking at the details of the suit. Examining the overall construction of the jacket is important in determining if the retailer is overcharging you. Start with checking the suit’s flower loop. The tailor should stitch this loop under the lapel to hold the flower’s base. Additionally, you should check the inside seam of the suit where the suit’s arm and body meet. Ensuring these two are properly constructed are some guidelines that you should follow before you end up purchasing.
KNOW THY SELF
Buying a suit can be a very stressful situation since you can be shelling out anywhere from $250-$1500. “Trusting your intuition” will facilitate this process and eliminate any second doubts. It’s paramount that you recircle back to your inner voice of what styles you were initially drawn to sans the pushy salesmen or your entourage that you brought along. Remember your fashion boils down to what you like, not what others want for you. If you feel great then you will look great, which will then get heads turning!
