DO'S AND DON'TS FOR A JUMPSUIT VIRGIN

Jumpsuits have been huge this past year and are not leaving the world of fashion any time soon. Hardly a week goes by where we don’t see a celebrities like the Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, or Jessica Alba rocking this style. In spite of this notion, many of us females, including myself until recently were scared to take the plunge into jumpsuit territory. For those of who can’t get their heads around how to work the jumpsuit look I’m here to help, so don’t you fret, you no longer have to fear looking like a race car driver but more like an A-list celebrity when considering if a jumpsuit is for you.

DO ROCK A SOLID COLOR
When in doubt, a solid color jumpsuit looks great on any woman. The continuous silhouette created by a single color lengthens the figure, and creates a flattering profile. Stick to solid colors, as they provide more class and elegance. You can still can be trendy through the cut and the color. I did exactly that with the jumpsuit I tried on at Necessary Clothing. I opted for a style in an orange red color hue because “orange is the new black” for spring 2014.

DON’T DO PATTERNS
Unless it’s a Halloween costume, try to stay away from prints. Sticking to solid colors and avoiding head to toe patterns creates a more modern and elegant look. Wearing a patterned jumpsuit can often create a juvenile look, making you  more like a kid playing dress up rather than a sophisticated fashionista.

DO LOOK FOR A LOOSE FIT
For any jumpsuit virgin, I recommend always going for a loose cut and nothing too tight. It’s essential that you pick the best fit for your body type. A big sin of fashion in any situation is wearing the wrong size. This sin can be exaggerated when wearing a jumpsuit. A poor fitting jumpsuit can bring attention to body imperfections, and may cause embarrassment. When you are unsure, a rule to go by is to make sure it’s loose enough for it to drape while cinching your waist. Also, opting for styles like flare or trouser leg like I did rather than skinny fit.

DON’T BUY A CASUAL JUMPSUIT
If you treat it like a Little Black Dress, it can be one of the most versatile items in your wardrobe. Investing in a formal jumpsuit will bring you more versatility to your everyday wardrobe. Choose more sophisticated materials for your jumpsuit rather than casual fabrics like cotton or linen.

DO KEEP INTEREST ON THE TOP
Since a jumpsuit is head-to-toe, it can sometimes be difficult to find the right style and size that balances the upper and lower body. Currently, there are plenty of styles from which to choose from, so one approach I recommend is to select the style from the top. Do this by choosing a neckline that works for your face and body type. The neckline you choose will create focus, balance, and frame your face and overall creating balance to your look. I picked a basic v-neck neckline, which created longer lines within my shorter frame.

DO KEEP THE ACCESSORIES SIMPLE
Since the jumpsuit is a continuous silhouette, the focal should be on the shape of the fabric. I recommend only choosing one accessory as a highlight with this look. Whether it’s earrings, a bracelet or statement necklace the concept “less is always more” should be applied. Keep in mind that bags, shoes, and belts are also elements within the look, so please apply that concept as well. With my look above I decided to wear long gold earrings.
