4 FUN AND MODERN DAY BABY DOLL DRESSES

You don’t have to be a baby or a doll, to wear fashion’s miracle dress, AKA THE BABY DOLL DRESS. Forget about all the stereotypes that come when thinking about this dress- Barbie doll clothing, 60 style dresses, or the grunge movement in the early 90’s. In fact, like the LBD, this should be your second best friend and a universal staple in every fashionista’s closet! The reason I love this style so much is because it flatters all body types because of it’s popular empire waist which flows out, and it perfects the art of looking innocent and flirty in one. Some of Hollywood’s hottest stars like Lana Del Rey, Chrissy Teigen, Sienna Miller, and Jessica Alba have been seen wearing this style. Here are 4 fun and modern styles you can copy right now!

WHIMSICAL IN WHITE
No summer is complete without having a fancy white dress! Since white can be hard to pull off with certain dress styles, the baby doll style is the ideal choice.

STYLE TIP: Working with a white dress is like painting on a blank canvas. The possibilities are endless when it comes to styling, so remember the concept “less is more.” Try to be consistent and use one color for both the jewelry and shoes. If you want to add bit more dimension you can throw in a second color with your handbag that will complement the accessory color you picked.

FEMININE IN FLORALS
One piece particularly that’s poised to be a great transitional piece for fall is the floral baby doll dress.

STYLE TIP: Look for floral prints that are versatile and can take you into the next season.  Go for a color palette that complements your overall skin tone and hair color, and one that can easily can be dressed up.

PRETTY IN PASTELS
Pastel colors have been on trend all summer.  Wearing this style dress in any pastel hue creates an effortless and super soft look.

STYLE TIP: When choosing a solid pastel hue in this dress try to go for a unique silhouette or design like a tiered style dress, cutouts, embroidery, crotchet, lace, or asymmetrical dress.

CHIC IN CROCHET
This year designers have upgraded the position of crochet on the fashion barometer. If you want to rock a baby doll dress with crochet, the easiest way is to find a piece with crochet detailing.

STYLE TIP: Since crochet is associated with 70’s style, or known for its boho vibe to counterbalance this and create to more of a contemporary and glamorous look choose accessories that are more formal and modern.

FASHION ALERT: TOP TRENDS FOR MEN’S FALL FASHION 2014

Fashion may not be your second language, like it is for most women such as my self, however it doesn’t mean you don’t care about what you wear, or await what’s supposed to hit stores every fall.  The problem is taking the runway trends and applying them to everyday wear. Some of these looks can be over the top, and be quite scary to pull off without looking like Boy George! Although your soaking up style now in the sun, fall will be here soon enough, so I have narrowed down the biggest trends that are not only wearable but will dominate the men’s fashion industry as soon as the summer sunshine sets sail.

TREND 1: VELVET ROPE
What better way to get past the velvet rope next time you hit a swanky spot, than wearing this season’s warm velvet. This style looks so dapper when wearing it to it’s fullest potential.  There is nothing more lavish and fun to wear in the cooler seasons than warm velvet. This trend has been hitting the runway and the red carpet with zeal, and designers and fashion editors couldn’t love it more. If you’re not ready to wear this trend head to toe, start with singe pieces, such as a jacket or shoes.

STYLE TIP: Pick a velvet item in a versatile color like dark brown, grey, black, or navy, so that when your building the remainder of your look you have more options to pair with. Also, it’s important to think beyond the color palette, and incorporate various textures into your look.  For example, say you are wearing a velvet sports jacket, you may want to wear leather loafers, slim fit denim, and a vintage style t-shirt. Within this look there are various textures from the fabrics going on, so it not only creates more dimension but makes it more eye-catching.

TREND 2: GREEN LEAVES
Although the green leaves will be falling to the ground, designers are transferring this hue to the runway. Green, a universal color that flatters all skin tones. Cooler shades of green such as hunter green look great against lighter skin, whereas warmer shades that have more yellow hues mixed with  green like olive look great against darker skin tones.

STYLE TIP: Refer back to the color wheel when trying to blend green into your wardrobe, because it will allow for several outfit combinations within your current wardrobe.

TREND 3: ORANGE YOU GLAD
Designers are no longer dressing in one mood. Orange is definitely the happy color for fall collections. Vibrant orange tones along with lighter hues are driving style enthusiasts to developing an “orange crush.” So why not show off your love of color with an occasional burst of orange this fall!

STYLE TIP: Start small with this color and focus on pattern pieces or solid hues.  Wear this color in single pieces, and pair with other neutral colors to balance off your look.

TREND 4: BLACK AND WHITE COOKIES
Speaking of yummy black and white cookies, the colors black and white are not going anywhere for fall and winter.  Whatever way you choose to wear this- black suit with white pinstripes, black suit with white trims, or a black and white dress shirt, it’s the easiest way to achieve a sophisticated look.

STYLE TIP: To create a super sleek look go for more fitted and tailored garments.

TREND 5: GET ON BOARD A HARLEY DAVIDSON
Gentlemen, the easiest way to add a bit of edge to your style is getting on board with the biker style jackets!   Classic black jackets are always a for sure win in the game of fashion, however this year’s trends are encouraging you to play with color for this bad boy style.

STYLE TIP: If you are going to venture out in choosing color with this style, stick with a neutral color palette like beige, olive, navy, camel, brown, or grey.

TREND 6: SKINNY SLACKS
Move over looser trousers and hello Michael Jackson pants! Skinny pants from the 60’s are back with a vengeance. These slacks are cropped around the ankle.

STYLE TIP: To balance the form fitting pants pair this style with bigger bulkier layers on top.

TREND 7: CHECK MATE
Men's trends come and go, but checks are never going anywhere in fashion. From tweed, tartan, gingham, plaid, and houndstooth this is to go-to pattern for 2014.

STYLE TIP: Check pieces make great styling pieces to be used in layering. Whether you go for a tweed blazer, plaid or houndstooth pea coat stick to neutral color palettes like navy, gray, camel, beige, brown, black, so you can get maximum wear with your designated piece.

TREND 8: NECK-COVERING STYLES
It seems like forever since neck-covering styles of shirts have been trending, but this fall and winter expect to see this. Although this trend is most popular in London, it’s taking the fashion world by storm.

STYLE TIP: Try wearing a roll neck instead of a tie next time you have to dress more formal.  Remember opt for a solid color roll neck in a neutral color palette because it allows for versatility.

“DRESS TO IMPRESS” PRINTS THAT GIVE POWER TO THE FLOWER

Florals? All year round? This seems to good to be true. Just Imagine having blooms year round, not the ones you can pick from the garden, but I’m talking the ones you can wear- FLORAL PRINTS. Fashion’s ongoing love affair with floral prints continues into 2014 with vengeance with a myriad of designers offering many different takes on the iconic pattern. The good news for you, there is enough Flower Power for all to go around, whether your style is edgy, classic, glamorous, retro, or down right chic! If you have been reading my blog, it’s evident from the pictures that I’m slightly addicted to this pattern, and practically every time I step foot in a store there’s a 50% chance it will be in bag! Knowing how to wear this print in an eye-catching way is lot like the creating a kick ass flower bouquet.  Whether you’re heading to bloom,  or just need a few on trend tips for 2014 , here are a few “Dress to Impress” prints for giving power to the flower!

RETRO FLORALS
Designers are having a “Blast from the Past” with florals. Be ready to embrace the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s with this print. This type of print is eternal in  fashion, and is in huge demand based on the increasing popularity for vintage fashion.

HOW TO WEAR: When wearing the retro inspired floral motif, it’s important to keep the accessories simple and modern, along with your makeup too. When concentrating with your makeup focus on either your eyes or lips.  Think of the concept “less is more” when styling your overall look.

DARK FLORALS
When one thinks of floral prints they automatically think of lively, bright, and romantic patterns.  Designers have thrown a curve ball to this common association and have come out with darker floral prints.  Like the black magic trend that was seen on runways this spring,  designers have taken this similar concept and applied to florals by mixing the print with on sheer fabrics and using black as a primary backround color.

HOW TO WEAR: Go for cuts that have a unique neckline, cinched in the waist, have a slit, or are asymmetrical.  Add a bit of brightness through the accessories and keep the focus of the makeup on a smokey eye and leave the lips in a light pink or nude gloss.

BRIGHT PRINTS
The bolder, the better, and designers and retailers seem to agree. Choosing vibrant florals to carefully redefine chic dresses, jumpsuits, and tops is a great way to incorporate color into your wardrobe.

HOW TO WEAR: Since brighter prints are eye-catching, it’s important that both the cut and color of the print complement your overall look. Pick a color floral print that complements your skin tone, and of course a cut that flatters your body.

TROPICAL  PRINTS
Rather than producing typical floral prints, designers are taking their tropical weather vacations to their work! Tropical prints consists of colors that include bright blues, sunny yellows, lime greens, dazzling pinks, Valencia oranges, sunset reds, and parrot greens. Unlike the typical flower bouquet designs, tropical flower designs tend to be a bit less structured.

HOW TO WEAR: Whatever print you choose, make sure there is one key color within the print that pops out. You’re going to use this as the focal color to your entire look.  Accessories and shoes should be used to either complement, match, or contrast this color.  Similarly, if you pick a top or pair of pants in this print, pair another piece with the same idea.

FASHION FLASHBLACK: 3 TRENDS TO SWING INTO THE 50’S

This article is dedicated in loving memory of my grandmother -Marylin Taubman- 1926-2014

Want to flaunt a little 1950’s Hollywood Glamour?  Marylin Monroe, Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, and Audrey Hepburn represented this era with flair. These iconic fashion forward women took the fashion world by storm, and transformed the style of the everyday women, including my grandmother who just passed away this July 19th (RIP). As a little girl, I recall digging up old photo albums, and antique jewelry at her house due to my eagerness in discovering what this era was all about, and of course what was she was like in her prime. Like the legendary stylist and designer Rachel Zoe says,” Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak,” and this theory was concurrent from all those black and white pictures of her in those lady like dresses, boxed jackets, pencil skirts, long bouncy skirts, long gloves and scarves. Her passing has inspired me to look back on how the 1950’s were a positive force in changing the face of fashion.  Even today, shows like Mad Men and movies like Grease and Hairspray play up this iconic style, and provide designers with great ideas to translate these trends into modern day fashion. Knowing how to wear the 1950's the modern way may be quite difficult, lucky for you I have done my research to show you 3 trends that will get you swinging into the nifty fifties!

TREND 1: FUN AND FLITY POLKA DOT DRESS
The Polka dot design became popular thanks to acclaimed designer Christian Dior, who first released a line of dresses in this print. Shortly following this, stars like Lucille Ball began to take to this style so much that she was often spotted wearing this on her famous TV show, I Love Lucy. The designer and celebrity influence of this trend has constantly recycled it self throughout history, and is current must have for 2014!

MODERN SPIN: For a more modern take on this 1950’s frock go beyond the classic color pattern of  navy and white and opt for brighter and bolder colors. Stay away from the typical polka dot shaped patterns and opt for larger shaped dots or oddly shaped dots that look more like “pop art” which can add an edgy feel to your look.

TREND 2: PRACTICAL BUT PRETTY SHIRT WAISTDRESS
Commonly known as the unofficial uniform of the classic housewife, today’s modern girl isn’t wearing her shirtwaist dress in an archaic way! The 1950s shirtwaist dress is a prototypical piece of the era, standing for the iconic ’50s housewives like Mad Men’s January Jones or Leave it to Beaver’s June Cleaver. During this time the advertising campaigns convinced the all American women that it was a must have for their everyday wardrobe, practical but pretty to wear all day long!

MODERN SPIN: This season the concept of shirting has been a major trend on the runways and retailers. A highly versatile blank canvas, a shirtdress can take you from day to night and back. The key to updating this look is through modern day accessories. For a plain color shirtdress like white or light blue, stick to a common theme within the accessories. For example, if you want to wear pastel colors or focus on the tribal inspired trend or even want to incorporate various textures, choose one as your highlight to your look.  Although picking a plain shirtdress may be the smartest option, picking a print or pattern can add an extra bit of modern day oomph! Try to find patterns that are trending within this look, such as floral, tropical, abstract, and geometric.

TREND 3: HIGH SOCIETY PEARLS
Pearls were the go-to necklaces in the 1950’s. Many options were available such as faux pearls, which came out for those who were on a tight budget. Legendary designer, Coco Chanel was one of the first designers to accessorize many of her designs with strings of pearls.

MODERN SPIN:  This season I’m predicting that “Pearls are a Girl’s best friend. Today designers are putting a spin on the once good-girl staple by adding an edgier feel. Today’s pearl has shed its prissy lineage and is taking on a cool edge, embellished on everything from clothes to jewelry.  Pearls are being mixed in eclectic ways with other types of jewelry like neon beads, diamonds, metallics, and even on tribal inspired jewelry. New designers are reincarnating pearls in a contemporary light. Whimsical and contemporary designs along with colored pearls make this a great accent for any ensemble!

FASHION BULLSEYE: 3 ABSTRACT LOOKS THAT ARE SPOT ON!

Made a style promise to wear bold prints this year? Being bolder, creative, and more confident with fashion is one of the most common resolutions, but it can be quite a frightening experience!   Just how do you incorporate the boldest prints without being called out by the Fashion Queen herself, Joan Rivers on her acclaimed show The Fashion Police.  One of summer’s most playful trends-ABSTRACT PRINTS- has taken center stage and have, needless to say, trickled down into my wardrobe as well. Artsy prints and abstract proportions are all over the A-list and the runway right now and for good reasons! Abstract prints in clothing unite art and fashion in one stroke. No longer do you have to take an art class to get this print right, but I have come up with 3 abstract looks to help you wear this style spot on!

SIMPLY CHIC
For those of you who haven't already taken the abstract print plunge yet this is a great way to start!  Since the abstract pattern can be overwhelming, it’s best if you’re a newbie, such as myself to stick to this option and focus on one one piece that is a sleek silhouette. Choose a piece that is form fitting, and not loose. In general steer clear of patterns that have elements significantly larger than your fist. With this look place more emphasis on the color palette instead of the shape or pattern of the print.  I did exactly that by choosing a multi-colored paint print in a form fitting crop top.

STYLE TIP: ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS
It’s important that once you have your chosen piece to think about how your going to build the remainder of your look. The easiest way to strike a bullseye with this trend is to  focus on the details of the pieces that you are going to incorporate.  I did exactly that by pairing a high waisted envelope pencil skirt with my abstract crop top. Rather than choosing a basic a-line skirt I picked an envelope/assymetrical style skirt to add more panache. To play up the details even more, I then decided upon an embellished gold chain strappy heel to add a glamorous touch to this edgy ensemble. To finish this look off,  I stuck to gold jewelry and kept it minimal with a gold cuff, and simple gold stud earrings. Instead of having several pieces of artwork hanging in your living room, this options allow you to become one!

PRINTS CHARMING
Spread your fashion wings and fly into this  trend full force.  Think head to toe prints, such as jumpers, rompers, dresses, and matching sets. When wearing prints in both bottom and top,  try sticking to prints that accentuate consistency  within the color and design. Remember abstract prints shouldn’t own you, you should own the print!

STYLE TIP: KNOW THY BODY
Knowing your body type helps greatly, so never purchase a garment with odd pattern or a hodgepodge of random colors without trying it on. If you’re curvy, stay away from larger scale designs and look for smaller patterns to accentuate your curves. On the other hand if you’re straighter, stick to lighter colors, and more form fitting silhouettes like, “bodycon.” Choosing the right shape and colors for this look is key. As a rule of thumb no matter what shape your body is, stick to a maximum of 4 colors when wearing this look head to toe. Too many colors when trying to rock this style can leave you looking like a clown rather than piece of art!  Sometimes wearing abstract prints can have a widening effect, so to counteract make sure to choose shoes that are simple and solid.  You can pick one of the colors in the pattern or choose a shoe that matches your skin tone. Don’t be surprised the next time you set foot wearing this trend head to toe to find Mr. Prince Charming right around the corner!

FANCY PANTS
Trumpets, drum roll please… make way for Ms. Fancy Pants! That’s right, when wearing this trend get ready to raise heads, and make a grand entrance too!  Printed pants are all the rage for 2014 and are the perfect trans-seasonal piece. Nothing says you’re ready for a special night out than a fab pair of abstract pants. Why not get inspired by this portrait-motivated clothing and look for patterns that are versatile and can be worn more than once, with various style tops.  In order to make this piece blend seamlessly in your wardrobe look for patterns that are smaller in scale and have no more than three colors.

STYLE TIP: NEUTRALIZE WITH SOLID COLORS
Remember when building your look, like Oscar de la Renta once said, “One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art.” And no one goes against the legendary designer –we dare not! This is why it’s important to finish your masterpiece off with solid color pieces in both accessories and tops. This way you can create balance among the pieces, so that the eye is not competing with another print. However, to create more symmetry with the bottom part of your look, you can wear a statement necklace, find a unique neckline for the top, or wear long chandelier earrings. This way there is a unity from top to bottom, but with two different items versus two prints. So what are you waiting for? Take a snap of this instagram worthy look, and get creative with your pants: the more abstract, the better!
