FASHION FLASHBLACK: 3 MODERN TRENDS TO ROCK RETRO

This season designers are having a major aha moment with the retro look. From the high waisted bottoms of the 50’s to the bold geometric prints of the 60’s everyone is getting their hands and feet wet with this style, including myself. I am absolutely in love with retro themed trends for the summer. There is something to be said for a modern day fashionista that can rock a retro look. Like everything in fashion, styles get recycled so before you say, “Been there, done that”, or fear looking like a film extra on a movie set, here are 3 trends to inject retro style into your modern wardrobe. Read on to become one step closer to becoming that modern day pin up girl!

TREND 1: THE RETRO PLAYSUIT
Forget about the trendy jumpsuit this summer, the latest one-piece wonder is fresh and oh so easy to rock! The retro playsuit was popular from the summer style clothing of the 1930’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s. Those who don’t have the time to plan their instgram worthy outfits from head to toe will love this trend, which is a no brainer- as “Does this skirt match this top.” Originally worn as a cover-up over swimsuits at the beach and pool, now designers have retro-nized the romper this summer from florals to paisleys  to nautical there is a flavor for everyone to sample.

STYLE TIP: HIGHLIGHT THROUGH THE ACCESSORIES
In order to capture the essence of the retro playsuit it’s important highlight your look through the accessories. I did exactly that by adding a thin red belt to break up the pattern of my romper. Rather than opting for a thin heel, I chose a thick silver heel to play up the iconic retro style from the 1950’s. By adding silver heels over the color white made the romper appear dressier. Finally, since I highlighted the romper with the shoes and the belt, I did not need to play up any jewelry, so I kept the earrings simple by wearing white floral studs to create pop to the color white in the pattern.

TREND 2: POP ON A CROP TOP
This summer is all about taking a risk, and what better trend to do this with than the good old crop top! If you don’t have abs of steel, a crop top may seem like a bad choice, lucky for many us, designers this year have reinvented the crop top in a variety of shapes, and lengths, from super short to skimming the waist. The trend generally targets the younger generation, but paired with high waisted skirts and pants and more conservative cuts, older generations are embracing this trend. For those of you who want to test drive this trend out without committing, try choosing a full-length top that you already own, such as button up and tie it up and wear it with a midi skirt or pair of jeans.

STYLE TIP: PLAY WITH PROPORTIONS AND PATTERNS: Go ahead and play with sizes and cuts of crop tops. There's no need to always have a slim fitting crop top for every bottom that is wide. Dive in head first with this trend and get your creative juices flowing by pairing roomier separates in clashing patterns.

TREND 3: SLIP INTO HIGH WAISTED SHORTS
So, while crop tops may be the summer’s leading scorer, the high waisted shorts are bringing in all the assists.  High waisted shorts are the easiest way to inject a bit of retro into your modern wardrobe. From denim to lace to even sequins there is an option for every fashionista. High waisted bottoms not only appeal to women of all ages, but also to women of all shapes. The amazing thing about this trend is that most bottoms are also wide-legged and loose-fitting which allows to conceal flaws.

STYLE TIP: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FIT
High waisted bottoms are also a solution to every girl’s dread: the muffin top. The key is finding bottoms that hit your natural waist and hug your hips.  Once you find the perfect fit, adding a skinny belt to draw attention to your high waisted style, or to emphasize your upper body and cinch your waist is definitely attention grabber!
