There are fashion trends that can be a little out there like Miley Cyrus’s see through fishnet dress or Lady Gaga’s shocking heels. Then there are some trends that are so spot on that I can’t wait to dive head first in! This month’s favorite? COLORBLOCKING! Over the past few years both celebrities and designers are going Goo goo ga ga for colorblocking! This trend is a fashionista’s dream come true; unlocking the true Picasso in each and every one of you! But chances are, as much as you love color blocking you may have not mastered this trend or may be down right intimidated to try it yourself. Get ready to gorge your eyes on this season’s fashion feast- color blocking! This is one recipe if done right will not only get your girlfriends talking, but few guys heads turning too! On the surface, color blocking may seem like a free-for-all but there are 3 key ingredients to get cooking in style. Read on to produce the most chic fashion feast this summer!
INGREDIENT 1: DON’T ADD MORE THAN 3 COLORS
It’s best to stick to two or three colors when applying the color block style. Too many colors will often times make you look too busy. If you have more than three colors you often lose focus from your look which results in an unbalanced design. Remember like art and applying make up, the use of colors are supposed to enhance your look and brighten your skin complexion. If you wear too much you might end up looking like an art experiment!
STYLE TIP: PICK ONE DOMINANT COLOR
The best way to start the color blocking process when using separate pieces is to choose one dominant color and then use the others to embellish it. The dominant color should be one that attracts attention, and complements your skin tone. The other colors you add will either be to contrast or complement the dominant color. This allows for you to build your look with ease.
INGREDIENT TWO: READY TO GO BATCH
Who doesn’t love a ready to go batch of cookie dough, I know I do! Especially when all you have to do is set the oven, bake, and your good to go Bon Appetite! Now take this concept and apply it to ready to wear color block items. The most commonly worn color block fashion staple are ready to go dresses. However, if dresses aren’t your thing then reach for a top or skirt.
STYLE TIP: 1. COLOR POP
When choosing a color blocked item choose a color in an article of clothing that is definitely going to pop against your skin tone. I did exactly that by choosing a bright blue as my primary color, with white border on tip of the dress.
STYLE TIP 2: MINIMALIST
Any color block item that has swirls of bright colors can be quite noticeable, so the best designs to look for are simple. The minimalistic approach goes in theory with color block fashion trend this season. The use of more elaborate and complex designs with bright colors can be harder to pull off and often times resulting in fashion faux pas. So if you decide to take the plunge with this trend, shop for simple styles. Since I decided to wear a dress, I stuck to a simple silhouette in a strapless a-line style. Other similar styles include any A-line, straight cut, fit and flare, body con, or sheath silhouette.
.
INGREDIENT 3: COLOR WHEEL
In the culinary world, expert chefs are taking spices from all over the world and creating spectacular gourmet dishes, similarly in fashion, designers are using bright hues taken from the opposite sides of the color wheel to create amazing ensembles. In order to create a perfect fashion feast with this trend, it’s imperative that you understand the basics of the Color Wheel. These components are complimentary and analogous colors. Complementary colors are opposite each other on a basic color wheel. This color combining method works well if you want to make something standout. Please use this method wisely because combos can be harsh to the eye if not done right. On the other hand, the analogous color schemes use colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. This color combo approach is more harmonious and pleasing to the eye.
STYLE TIP: PAINT ON THE ACCESSORIES
No cake is completely done, until the decadent frosting is painted on! Likewise, no solid color item or basic color blocked article of clothing is finished until the accessories are painted on. This by far the easiest way to make a statement with color blocking. Since, I picked a rather basic style dress I was able to incorporate another color through the accessories. Since blue is next to green in the color wheel, I used mint green earrings and a mint colored strappy heel to highlight the silhouette of the blue dress.
