How many times have you wanted to not wear a tie to a wedding, work event, reunion, party, or charity event and you couldn’t get yourself to go through with it? So many men face this dilemma each time they suit up for formal occasions. Wearing a tie with a suit is programmed in your fashion lingo as style etiquette Now, what if you took a gamble and lost the tie altogether? The majority of men in America are faced with this common ongoing dilemma that every dressy event calls for a tie. Although it may seem like an impossible feat to pull off, lucky for you I have done my daily homework and have found style tips to help you look as good if not better than the handsome George Clooney on the Red Carpet!
STYLE TIP 1: GO FOR A TAILORED SUIT
If your going tieless it’s important that your suit fits you like a glove. Make sure the suit you plan to wear is not loose in any area, and if it is then proceed with tailoring so the shape is more defined.
STYLE TIP 2:KEEP THE SUIT SOLID
One way to avoid the common look of “I was wearing a tie, but I took it off so I can go dancing on the wedding reception floor,” is to choose basic solid color suits in neutral colors like navy, grey, light grey, or beige for summer. If you do opt for a pattern like pin stripes, make sure it’s barely noticeable to the eye.
STYLE TIP 3: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE COLLAR
The fit of your shirt and the width of the collar are key factors to ensure that you can pull off sans tie like an A-lister! Try considering a smaller collar shirt or spread collar to look your best without a tie. Make sure the collar keeps it shape, and if you must then go for collar stays.
STYLE TIP 4: SHOES AND ACCESSORIES MUST DAZZLE
You must “dress to impress” with your shoes and accessories. Remember on a formal occasion you cannot look casual so that’s why it’s important that your shoes and accessories are magnificent, because they balance out the formality of not having a tie. Take some risks and try a monk strap shoe, or derby colored suede shoe, wear a dressier watch, add cufflinks, or consider a bright color pocket square. If it’s summer and the event is outside of your work try going sockless.
TIP 5: WEAR A SHIRT WITH A SUBTLE PATTERN
Don’t get me wrong, solid color shirts work great when going tieless, however a slight pattern in the dress shirt can prevent you from looking too minimalist. The slight patterns to look for in a dress shirt are along the lines of tiny tattersall or pencil stripes.
TIP 6: UNBUTTON WITHIN REASON
There are two factors that determine when you can unbutton the second button, and they are time and place, and fit of the shirt. Obviously business meetings don’t call for the second button to be undone, but if your at a wedding or charity event it’s a green light. Now unbuttoning the second button can be quite tricky, because you don’t want your shirt completely open, so you end up looking like Channing Tatum from the movie Magic Mike! However, this can be done if the second button starts up high on the shirt. Use your judgement wisely If the second button starts lower than a normal place of where a second button should be than you should probably not unbutton it. On the other hand, even though it's trending you don’t have to wear it all buttoned up which can often create an extremely stiff look.
TIP 7- WALK IN WITH GEORGE CLOONEY CONFIDENCE
The most important thing to remember once you perfect the tieless look is to own it! No matter how good you look, it won’t work unless you look and feel comfortable, confident, and cool doing it. Trust me by the time you take and apply these tips you will be giving George Clooney a run for his money!
