Going for the gold isn't just a slogan for the Olympics Games anymore, but the precious metal has trickled its way into Fall Fashion , and can best be seen in 60’s inspired trends. Every season there is fashion flashback, and this time around it’s all about the swinging 60’s. The good news is Halloween has come early for those of you who are “Mad for Mod,” on the other hand some of you may wince at the thought of not only “playing dress up” in 60’s inspired pieces, but wearing gold too! What may seem like only a fashion faux pas may also be a double whammy! But what if someone, such as myself provided you with key trends to look for in order to make going for the gold in mod fashion not only blend seamlessly within your wardrobe, but have you dressing to the 9’s! Read on further so you can make one statement this fall, and I mean STYLE STATEMENT!
MOD FASHION TREND 1: EMPIRE WAISTLINE
The empire waistline, a ’60s dress silhouette characterized by a shaped, defined waistline positioned higher than the natural waist on a female’s body. The empire waist always rests below the bust, which accentuates the body’s length creating a longer, leaner frame. With this cut I recommend looking for dresses or tops that display this style.
WEAR IT NOW WITH GOLD
Some matches are made in heaven, especially when it comes to the combination of black and gold. Looking for a dress in this color combination and style is always Oscar worthy! I did exactly that by finding a gold foil print dress with black in the pattern.
STYLE TIP 1: MIX AND MATCH THE JACKET
When you opt for black and gold dress it creates endless possibilities when it comes to styling the remainder of your look. Whatever jacket type you choose will always change the style of the dress your wearing. In one look I wore a short leather jacket, whereas in another look I wore a lace blazer. Both jackets created two entirely different looks. The leather jacket created an edgy feel for a night out, whereas the lace blazer created more of formal type feel for a business event. Also, rather than opting for a black solid blazer I decided to play up the 60’s style further by mixing two different prints on top of each other.
STYLE TIP 2: SHOES SPEAK THE SEASON
Even though black and gold is being worn primarily in the fall, you can start by wearing it right now by choosing the right footwear. In one picture, I wore an open toed strappy heel that screams summer, whereas in another look I wore a closed toed heel that is worn during the fall and winter months.
MOD FASHION TREND 2: MINI SKIRTS & DRESSES
Every fashionista reading this right now owns or has owned a miniskirt or a mini dress at one time or another. No matter who you are there is a style for everyone whether it’s formal, fun or funky, this is one trend that is here to stay. The miniskirt unquestionably influenced the rise in hemline for fashion. Thanks to Designer Mary Quant , she had introduced her version of the above the knee skirt to fashion scene in London, which later evolved into what is known today as the “mini.”. The mini skirt’s length continually crept higher, starting at the knee and slowly rising breaking the fashion boundaries of the 60’s. Eventually the fashion world loved the mini so much that the extraordinarily short style skirt called the “micro” mini came onto the scene!
WEAR IT NOW WITH GOLD
Go for high-waisted mini skirts because this style flatters all shapes creating a tiny waist and legs that look a mile long. If your going for a mod style mini dress they are extremely versatile. You can dress it up with a blazer, scarf, tights, or wear leggings depending on the weather.
STYLE TIP: PAIR GOLD PIECES WITH NEUTRALS
When wearing this trend it’s best to pair your designated gold piece with neutrals. Whether you opt for the dress or skirt by using neutrals to balance out a gold piece you can keep an ultra modern look without going over the top.
MOD FASHION TREND 3: LADYLIKE BAGS
Ladylike dressing was big in the 60’s and it’s even bigger this fall season. What better way to wear this trend than with a quick update on your fall bag. Think ladylike structured bags with quilting, chain details, bows, ribbons, and ladylike top handles. Proper and perfect to take from the office to a night out, and a classic style that will complement most of your wardrobe.
WEAR IT NOW WITH GOLD
Look for gold detailing or intricate embellishments of gold, rather than the whole handbag being gold. If you prefer to find a gold hue bag, instead of going for the standard bright shade of this color, choose a variation like a bronze or something lighter like champagne.
STYLE TIP: STICK TO NEUTRAL COLORS
Stick to neutral colors like grey, beige, crème, navy, blue, brown, or black when also looking for the gold detailing. As a rule of thumb, Neutral color bags allow for maximum wear and versatility within a wardrobe.
MOD FASHION TREND 4: STATEMENT JEWLERY
The easiest way to dip into gold and the 60’s at the same time is through jewelry. Think big, bold and bling costume jewelry often worn as a matching set with formal attire. Jewelry in the 60’s was another way for women to get dressed up without the formality of putting on a dress. Pieces were designed to be breathtaking and blow others away with amazement.
WEAR IT NOW WITH GOLD
Wear matching sets of earrings and necklaces and try to look for more vintage inspired pieces. You can get a bit more creative and go beyond the basic gold and bling duos that you would normally find and look for more color stones within the design.
STYLE TIP:FOCUS ON SOLID COLOR PIECES
Stay away from prints and pattern pieces when wearing costume and statement jewelry. Remember the focus of your look is on the jewelry, so your outfit should be pretty basic. If you do decide on a print opt for wearing it on the lower half of your body versus the top, since necklines were lower in the 60’s as way to highlight a eye-catching necklace!
