Over the years I have come to the conclusion that finding the right foundation is a lot like finding a soul mate. A great foundation is a must for flawless-looking skin, but it's tricky to get it right. Similarly, a great relationship is a must-have for it to be your soul mate. Think about it, picking the perfect foundation is a lot like dating, you figure out which types you are drawn to, the amount of coverage it will provide, if it meshes with your lifestyle, and if it’s suitable for long term purposes so you won’t have to keep on shopping around! I can go on and on regarding my negative experiences of finding the right coverage to wear for day or night, but rather I want to share the positive outcome I came up with which are 5 key steps to helping you find your soul mate, and I mean the makeup type! Read on to becoming one step closer to reaching make-up martial bliss!
STEP 1: KNOW WHAT TYPE OF SKIN YOU HAVE
In the dating world, finding the right mate boils down to you knowing who you are and what you want out a of a partner. Likewise, finding the perfect base or foundation comes down to knowing what type of skin you have: oily, dry, normal, combination , or sensitive. Based on your skin type and desired finish: matte, radiant, or natural you can select the foundation best suited for your needs.
STEP 2: SELECT COVERAGE
So now that you know yourself, and have criteria that work for you in what you’re looking for let the fun begin. Start narrowing down the potential suitors based on your criteria. Likewise, if you don’t like to wear a lot of makeup and have great skin that is on the dry side you would probably go with a tinted moisturizer, or BB cream because they tend to hydrate dry skin and provide little to minimal coverage. On the other hand, if your skin is like mine which is oily, sensitive and flares up easily with the occasional blemish it’s best that you look for products that say “oil free”, “won’t clog pores”, and are suitable to sensitive skin. These are often lightweight oil-free liquids that have a medium finish, and have fewer ingredients. As I have become savvier with make-up I noticed the more ingredients a product has the more it’s prone to react with my skin. I can’t count how many times I have returned products because the ingredients have aggravated my skin or caused me to break out. That’s why it’s super important you know your skin, so you settle on an ideal product.
STEP 3: ASSESS SKIN COLOR AND TONE
It’s been about two weeks in the dating process and your going through your check list. You checked off the attraction , and now your figuring out which suitor adds a bit of color to your life, and sets the right tone towards building a great relationship. Likewise, once you checked off your skin type, the amount coverage, and have settled on an ideal product it’s important that you assess your skin color and tone. Skin tone divides into the following category: fair, moderately fair, medium, medium deep, deep and very deep. Next, on to undertone, which is a word that often confuses people. Undertone is the color that is most predominant in your skin after brown and white. The most common undertones are usually cool, warm, neutral, and olive. Everyone no matter what type of skin tone you have fall into some range or variation of these undertones. Perhaps the easiest way to figure out your skin’s undertone, although it doesn’t always work for everyone, is to check the color of your veins. If your veins look blue, you have a cool undertone, if they look green you have a warm undertone and if you can’t tell, you’re neutral. Your undertone will always be the same even if you tan.
- Cool- Pink, Red, or bluish undertone (paler skins often fall under here)
- Warm- Yellow or Golden Undertone
- Neutral- a mix of warm and cool- olive usually falls in this category
STEP 4 : CHOOSE THREE SHADES TO TEST OUT
It’s important to keep in mind before you decide upon the best fit that you give top suitors all a chance, until one really matches what your looking for. With that being said, always leave room to test three shades out that appear close to the undertone. Make sure you test them on a clean jaw line before you make your choice. The shade that disappears is the correct shade match. Be sure to use enough foundation so that you get a clear idea of its true color, because a little dot won’t be suffice. If you prefer wearing a shade darker make sure you blend it out all over to see if diffuses evenly with your skin. Once it’s on always go into an area where there is more natural light so you can see how the makeup lays smooth among the light.
In the dating world sometimes you have to kiss a few frogs before you find that prince! I know this quite too well! However, it’s important not to get frustrated and give into a match that doesn’t work, because in the end you won’t be happy. If the matches that you are dating aren’t right then clear your plate and start from ground zero. Always trust your intuition and don’t listen to others when it comes to finding the right match. Likewise, don’t get frustrated or down if you went through all the steps and your just not feeling the foundation, or it’s not a perfect match. Just repeat those steps again another time with a different product, and eventually all it takes is one time and one base to be the perfect make-up soul mate!

Giorgio Armani Silk Foundation $62- =*
I absolutely love this foundation. This provides the perfect amount of coverage without appearing that I am wearing makeup. As a bonus it doesn’t cause breakouts or aggravate sensitive skin. The formula is adjustable for all desired finishes. You can just build on for those who prefer more. It provides an airbrushed look that stays on all day. Although it's a bit expensive it’s worth the investment especially if your skin is sensitive and prone to breaking out. It can last a while if you use it for special occasions and nighttime events.

Covergirl Trublend Pressed Powder – $7.99- * I wear this in the medium 4 sometimes during the day when I don’t want to wear foundation or heavy coverage, and love it. It’s very light and evens out your skin so naturally it blends well with your bronzer and concealer. The finish is a rare find for the price.
