The sweet spot is no longer just reserved for above the knee it’s below! Good news for gals who dread the lovely mini dress and extra bonus for those who hate to shave their legs every day with fall's hottest silhouette, below-the-knee dress. Designers have really out done themselves this season, and have provided a fresh version for everyone to try. Lately I’m getting really inspired for the 50’s and 60’s styles and what better way to feed this obsession than from two of my favorites, the movie Grease and of course how can you forget the acclaimed TV series Madmen! It’s starting to feed my craving to dress from this era especially in below -the-knee dresses. Don’t be scared you are not going to look like a character from out of the movie Hairspray, but rather a modern day Betty Draper with my four tips for making it look fresh!
GO SKY HIGH
If you’re used to showing off your legs in above the knee hems or in mini dresses and you’re afraid the longer hemline will make you appear shorter and frumpier, I understand! But a pair of sky-high heels will always make your frame appear leaner and longer. Find a great pair of heels that will elongate your silhouette. Go for solid colors in heels rather than patterns, or multi-colored because they create the illusion of a longer frame.
FITS LIKE CINDERELLA’S SHOE
Just like the fairytale of Cinderella, the fairy godmother gave Cinderella shoes that were the perfect fit for her, so when choosing a below-the-knee length dress it’s important to keep this concept in mind and go for something that fit’s you like a 10! This means avoid baggier styles and even ones that are so tight you can’t breathe. Go for fabric that is stretchable and expands like lycra, rayon, elastane, or spandex. Please keep in mind bodycon styles tend be more stretchable and fit your body like a glove.
GO TO THE BRIGHTER SIDE
Forget basic black or neutral navy, and go for more bolder and brighter colors when sporting the below-knee dress. In life it’s always better to look at the brighter side of things, so why not apply this concept to this style dress. To make a statement in a subtle way look for colors that are brighter and richer rather than your basic neutral color palette. I did exactly that by wearing a bright vivacious cobalt blue dress.
FOCUS ON A TREND OR TWO
When choosing to sport a below the knee dress remember to keep your look interesting by focusing in on at least one element that is trending. Luckily, the dress I wore had two trends within one! The first is the peek-a-boo trend, and another is the smashing color cobalt blue, which is huge for fall 2014. Whether you choose to go for a print that is trending, style, or color, zero in on that for building your look!
